Routine wellness care and health checks play an important role in helping your equine partners enjoy long healthy lives. Regular checkups allow us to gather a complete and accurate picture of your horse’s health. Wellness visits include a thorough physical examination of your horse, nutritional counseling, parasite prevention, blood work when indicated and any diagnostic testing that are deemed necessary.
The pre purchase examination is a thorough physical and soundness evaluation and is designed to point out potential problems a horse may have and determine if the horse would be suitable for the intended use. The pre purchase examination will help you buy with your head not just your heart. Regardless of the purchase price of a horse, pre purchase examination is an invaluable tool in helping you decide if this is the right horse for you.
We provide a complete evaluation of your prospective horse’s health and soundness. A thorough physical examination is performed including listening to the heart and lungs, visual examination, neurologic evaluation and soundness exam. In addition, radiographs, ultrasound, endoscopy or blood tests may be utilized.
Horses gaits can be assessed when the horse has an alteration (lameness) or to establish a baseline (performance exam). Lameness may manifest physically in the gait or could show through changes in attitude or performance. For each exam, the history of the horse is taken, a physical exam in completed, horses are watched in motion, joint flexions are performed, and diagnostic tests are done (if necessary).
Cloverfield Equine has the most sophisticated Digital Radiography system available. Digital x-rays are images that are captured digitally on a special plate then transferred to a computer where they are stored and can be viewed immediately. Our digital x-ray unit is portable and can be taken into the field, directly to the horse, which eliminates the stress of hauling a lame horse into the clinic. Digital radiographs provide our vets with the ability to examine the skeletal system and inner workings of the body to identify any potential concerns or problems. This means an onsite diagnosis which allows for immediate treatment if necessary.
Digital radiographs offer many advantages over conventional x-rays. The resolution of the images are far superior and the radiographs can be enlarged and manipulated to reveal problems that might not otherwise be visible. Each image is captured, verified, and saved on the computer in seconds which significantly decreases the waiting time since the x-rays do not have to be taken off the site to be developed. If the image does not turn out exactly how we desire, immediate retakes are performed. Images can be sent to other veterinarians, clients and referral clinics.
Cloverfield Equine offers the most advanced digital ultrasound available. Ultrasound is a valuable tool for evaluation of a variety of different conditions and monitoring healing progress. Ultrasound uses real time acoustic waves to provide an image of many different structures including musculoskeletal structures such as feet, lower limb, joints, pelvis and neck.
Cloverfield Equine has an extensive in house laboratory for critical care blood testing, Lyme disease, blood counts and more. We also work with outside labs including Idexx, Cornell University, Colorado State , and Antech Diagnostics.
Platelet-rich plasma or PRP is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets. As a concentrated source of autologous platelets (the patient’s own platelets), PRP contains (and releases through degranulation) several different growth factors and other cytokines (cells that oct os intercellulor mediators in the generotion of an immune response) that stimulate healing of the bone and soft tissue.
We collect the horse’s whole blood and processes it using the most advanced and safe PRP processing equipment available. A high-speed centrifuge separates and concentrates platelet-rich plasma from whole blood cells. The PRP is injected into the soft tissue lesions with ultra sound guidance. The PRP releases growth factors that stimulate heallng in bones, tendons, skin, and cartilage. Because the PRP is a byproduct of the horses’ own blood, rejection or transmission of disease is rare. PRP can also be stored and injected into the horse again at a later time, if needed
Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein or IRAP is a natural treatment that has been developed for the treatment of joint disease in horses. IRAP is part of the body’s natural mechanism of stopping inflammation within joints. Without inflammation, tissue re-injury can be avoided. The substance used in IRAP is made from white cells in the horse’s bloodstream. We collect blood from the horse and incubate it in the presence of specially designed glass beads, which amplify IRAP production. When the IRAP has reached the desired level, it is administered to the injured horse via injection into the affected joint.
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) technology is a non-invasive procedure that, with the use of a probe, creates shockwaves that stimulate healing by increasing blood flow to cells that repair damaged tissue.
By using different sized probes that produce specific shockwave energy to varying depths of tissue, superficial and deep, shockwaves are directed precisely to the particular area of injury. Shockwave therapy speeds healing and improves the quality of repaired tissue, often returning a horse to full soundness and a level of top competition.
